5. Pastoral Letter of His Eminence Cardinal Mercier Archbishop of Malines. Christmas 1914. Official Translation (London: Burns and Oates, 1914). Entitled “Patriotism and Endurance,” the Cardinal’s Christmas letter describes the sufferings of the Belgium people and German atrocities. The words of Mercier were forceful and courageous. According to authors Horne and Kramer, “Mercier saw the calumny against Belgium as one of the country’s heaviest tribulations; he roundly rejected the legality of the German occupation and called on his flock to withhold their recognition.” Horne and Kramer, German Atrocities, 1914: A History of Denial (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2001) 271.

6. Joseph de Veuster (1840–89) took the name “Damien” after he joined the religious order of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in 1859. He is remembered for his courageous missionary work among the lepers on the island of Molokai.
